This isn’t an easy post to write, but it’s been a long time coming. I’ve officially left Facebook, and soon, I’ll be saying goodbye to Instagram too. These platforms have been a huge part of my personal and professional life for years, but some things matter more than algorithms and likes. It’s about standing up for what’s right—and I can’t stay silent about the harm these platforms are allowing anymore.
As a gay man and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve seen hate speech become a daily occurrence on Facebook. What’s worse? It goes unchecked. Reporting posts or comments that are clearly harmful often leads to... nothing.
They stay up, thriving in a space that claims to foster connection. Honestly, it’s exhausting. Every hateful comment, every harmful post that’s allowed to linger, feels like a punch to the gut—not just for me but for every queer person who deserves to feel safe online.
What pushed me over the edge wasn’t just the trolls (though there are plenty). It’s Facebook and Instagram’s policies. Under the guise of “neutrality” or “free speech,” they’ve become a playground for people who spew anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric while silencing those of us who dare to fight back.
I’ve had posts throttled, visibility slashed, and even harmless content flagged. Meanwhile, harmful content continues to spread like wildfire. It’s not a glitch—it’s a choice these platforms are making, and it’s clear whose side they’re on.
Let’s be real: Instagram often feels like the “fun, artsy” sibling of Facebook, but it’s really just Facebook with a prettier face. The same problems exist. The same policies are in play. And with Meta pulling all the strings, it’s only getting worse.
The platform’s increasing anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ+ stances are impossible to ignore. I’ve built a business and community here, but I can’t stay on a platform that doesn’t align with my values.
Leaving these platforms isn’t easy. As a photographer, they’ve been huge tools for connecting with clients and sharing my work. But let me tell you this: no amount of likes, shares, or bookings is worth staying silent when harm is being done.
I want my business, my art, and my life to reflect what I stand for—love, inclusion, and a safe space for everyone to be exactly who they are. Supporting platforms that work against that? That’s not who I am.
Don’t worry, I’m not disappearing! You’ll still be able to keep up with me and my work in plenty of other places. Here’s how:
My Website: B. Farnum Photography is my main hub. You’ll find everything you need there—from galleries to updates.
Other Platforms: I’m leaning into spaces like LinkedIn, and Pinterest, where I can connect without sacrificing my values.
Email & Newsletters: Yep, I’m bringing it old school. Sign up to get the latest updates, exclusive offers, and a little behind-the-scenes magic.
This isn’t just about me leaving Facebook or Instagram. It’s about taking a stand. It’s about creating and supporting spaces where everyone—no matter who they are or whom they love—can feel safe, seen, and celebrated.
Thank you for being part of this journey with me. Your support means everything, and I hope you’ll stick with me as I take this next step. Let’s continue building something beautiful together, away from the noise, and full of love.
With gratitude,
Brian
